Freehand Fade to Gatorade Blue Ground
2007
Acrylic on linen
78.75 x 71.75"
These “fade paintings” are single images that come apart or disappear. The illusion is one of spontaneity: one thinks a translucent airbrush, spill, pour, or even light itself has interrupted the image, but the shift in hue occurs slowly and deliberately, one handmade gesture at a time. The asterisk and tripod shapes are derived from the geometry of Islamic tile grids. This working drawing reveals the subtle shifts necessary to create the illusion.
